Celestial Disfavor
Until the game ends, after each time an attack is declared, each player in turn order from the Attacker chooses and bows one of his unbowed Personalities with his Clan alignment and a base Gold Cost of 6 or less. “The Elemental Dragons rarely interfere in the affairs of mortals. When they do, the Empire trembles.”
Strategy (14)
Coordinated Assault
Coste: 0; Focus: 4. Tactical. Battle: Choose one to three performing Tacticians: Give each of them +3F. The superiority of the Lion leadership lies not in one general, or even several. The Lion are peerless on the battlefield because every leader of men can be trusted to implement even the most complex of plans on the spur of the moment.
Demand Obedience
Coste: 0; Focus: 3. Battle: Choose your performing Samurai Personality: Look at the top 5 cards of your Fate deck. You may attach one of them that is a Follower to your Samurai. Put the remaining cards at the bottom of the deck in any order. Samurai are the pinnacle of society. When they call, it is an honor to follow.
Deny the Darkness
Coste: 0; Focus: 4. Jade. Battle: Choose your unbowed performing defending Personality: Bow a target enemy Personality, and if he is Shadowlands, negate his straightening (until the turn ends). For over a thousand years, the defenders of the Empire have found ways to protect Rokugan. Even the forces of the Shadowlands have been broken before Rokugan’s protectors.
Deny the Horde
Coste: 1; Focus: 1. Battle: If your army has fewer units than the enemy army, choose your unbowed performing Samurai or Berserker: The enemy leader targets and destroys one of his Personalities in his current army. The resiliency of the Crab is legendary within Rokugan. Their armies stand against overwhelming odds, yet emerge victorious.
Faint Praise
Coste: 0; Focus: 3. Political. Open: Before the next time this turn a player gains Honor during his Dynasty Phase or from one of his own actions, he loses that amount of Honor instead of gaining it. Mockery is a fine art. The listener must know he is snubbed, but also must not be given a basis for vendetta.
Howls of the Dead
Coste: 0; Focus: 2. Open: Choose one to three performing Undead Personalities: Give them and each of their Undead Followers Cavalry. Peasant legends state that the howling of the wind is caused by the shrieks of lost souls. On some nights, the legends are true.
Ominous Battlefield
Coste: 0; Focus: 2. Terrain. Battle: Before this battle’s resolution, you may target and bow a Nonhuman or Cavalry card (at the current battlefield). Horses are swift, and the more exotic denizens of the empire bring strange and powerful abilities to battle. But no animal can match the spirit and discipline of the children of the Sun and Moon.
Opportunistic Advance
Coste: 0; Focus: 2. Battle: Choose your unbowed performing Commander: He gets word of a weakness on the enemy flank. Move another target unit in his army to a battlefield. Often, all that is necessary to break an army is a unit charging its flank.
Planned Adversity
Coste: 0; Focus: 4. Unique. Limited: Destroy one of your non-Unique Holdings: Search your Dynasty deck for a non-Unique Holding. Put the new Holding into play (bowed). “Leaders have plans in place for both times of plenty and times of strife. Visionaries can create either condition upon demand.” –Yasuki Jinn-Kuen’s Assessment
Shadowed Words
Coste: 0; Focus: 1. Political. Limited: Choose your performing Courtier or Ninja Personality: Shuffle one or two target Political Strategies from your discard pile into your deck. Remove this card from the game. Not all treaties are arranged by courtiers, nor all deals finalized in the courts. Sometimes, politics come to fruition in the most unorthodox places, facilitated by the most unlikely individuals.
Shattered Stone Kata
Coste: 0; Focus: 3. Kata. Limited: Put this card into play in your home. Discard any other Kata cards there. While this card remains in play, you have the ability, “Battle: If you are taking this action as an additional action, choose your performing unbowed Monk: Ranged Attack with strength equal to his Chi plus 1.”
Sohei’s Duty
Coste: 0; Focus: 1. Battle: If you control a Temple and any enemy units are at the current battlefield, choose your performing Monk: Move him there. Straighten his unit if he moved. If he is now in a defending army, you may take an additional Battle action to use a base ability on a card in his unit. Warrior orders among monks are keen to defend their shrines.
Subversive Whispers
Coste: 0; Focus: 3. Kiho • Unique. Open: Bow your performing Shugenja: Discard a face-down card in a province or a face-up Personality in a province. “We cannot defeat him in battle, master.” “We will not need to.”
Succumb to Vice
Coste: *; Focus: 2. Limited: Bow and dishonor your performing Personality with one or more Sake tokens, and pay Gold equal to the targeted unit’s total Gold Cost: Destroy a target unit. Members of the samurai caste are taught to control their emotions. This leads to tragedy when one has had too much to drink.
Spell (2)
Shelter the Earth
Coste: 2; Focus: 4. Earth. Open: Destroy this card: Create a +3F Armor Item, or +4F if the performing Shugenja is Earth, and attach it to him. The kami of Earth are slow to rouse and slow to act. However, once they have decided to protect a place or a person, they are slow to yield, even to the most ferocious of blows.
Steed of the Ebbing Tides
Coste: 0; Focus: 3. Air • Water. Open: Bow the Shugenja unless he is Air or Water: Give your target Samurai Personality Cavalry. “This invocation was created by the Unicorn during their time in the Burning Sands. What is fascinating is how the spell was refined after the Unicorn met the Isawa…” –Asako Bairei
Item (2)
Awakened Blade
Coste: 3; Focus: 3. +2F / +1C. Kami • Weapon • Unique. Battle: Destroy this card: Destroy a target enemy card with lower Force than this Personality’s Force (before destroying this card) and no Weapons or Armor. Swords whose kami have awakened are great treasures. Entire generations seek to be worthy of them.
Fearsome Mempo
Coste: 3; Focus: 2. +3F / –1C. Cursed. Reaction: After engaging in a battle: Give –2F to a target Personality or Follower opposing this card. “Fear can be instilled in many ways. One of the simplest is to make your foe question who he faces.” –Yogo Kazunori
Follower (2)
Ambitious Merchant
0F / 0C
0HR / 1G
Merchant • Unique. Reaction: When paying a Gold cost, destroy your target Holding: Produce 3 Gold. No true samurai troubles himself with petty things such as commerce or business. This provides opportunity to one who is wealthy and daring enough to handle such things for the noble classes.
Focus: 3
Aspiring Ronin
3F / 0C
0HR / 3G
Ronin. Will only attach to a Samurai Personality. To advance in life, a ronin needs to serve a samurai, a lord with lands, family, and future. Merchants or peasants might supply money for the next meal, but only the samurai of the clans can supply a chance for the ronin to better herself.
Focus: 2
